On One Knee

We explore a potent position that is part of a global movement to end systemic racism. Note: if this in any way feels like something that you don’t want do be doing then please honor your feelings!

Movement & Creativity Podcast EP #6:

A few responses from participants:

“It’s a humbling position on bended knee, and as I moved it felt like had freedom within and strength”

“Extremely humbling. Brings my emotions in to awareness, and in to presence in my body. Thank you deeply.”

“I felt moved to write to you after practicing the mini live lesson with you yesterday. Firstly, thank you for offering this lesson and for acknowledging what is happening, what has happened and the overdue need for change. I have to admit I was a little shocked by your introduction, despite seeing the name of the lesson I hadn't associated the relationship with recent events. I initially wasn't sure how I felt about continuing with the lesson, the mention of George Floyd's murder did bring up the harrowing image of him on the floor under the knee of his killer but I started to move gently with grief and even though I was pretty wobbly at times and couldn't sense some things very clearly I could feel change happening.

At the end of the lesson, I could feel emotions rising to the surface and when you said the words "systemic racism" something released and the tears came flooding. After so many years of treading on egg shells around the subject of racism, not calling it by it's name for others' comfort, contracting myself and silencing my experiences even amongst some best friends, it is so liberating to talk freely and to hear racism being talked about openly in many different forums. I just wanted to share that with you. Sometimes it's the small things.”

From MarySusan Chen, PT, GCFP:

“In the Feldenkrais Method we often say ‘don’t do what is uncomfortable.’ However to grow during these times, we might be challenged - or might want to challenge ourselves - to move beyond our usual comfort zone.

During Feldenkrais lessons we develop 'interoceptive abilities' such as sensing muscle tension, softening the jaw and tongue, freeing our breathing. Perhaps this is the time when we might use those abilities while we venture into new territory. These body practices can be our compass and also our strength. Having our physical responses, perhaps softening them AND stepping into new territory, building new relationships and new systems.  Organically and in Presence. - from the grounding of our feet, to the reaching out to those who have always been our brothers and sisters, with freedom, awareness, and choice.

I am reminded of a quote by the great wise writer Clarissa Pinkola Estes,

"When a great ship is in harbor and moored, it is safe, there can be no doubt. But that is not what great ships are built for."
